CHAPTER 13

As soon as the celebration was over and the guests had trickled out of Rosalea - some barely able to walk to their carriages with how much they’d drank - Percy and Elena stumbled over their words, trying to keep a straight face as they claimed to be too exhausted to stay up and have cake with their families, retiring to the bedroom that had been prepared for their wedding night instead.

Contrary to every other bedroom in the house, this one was situated on the ground floor and overlooked the rose garden and the lake; it was quite a beautiful image, still, it unsettled Elena. She had been avoiding thinking of any sort of intimacy between herself and Percy, but now wished she’d tried to at least find a way to make sure they wouldn’t have to resort to desperate measures.

Not wanting to continue wandering down that mental path, Elena decided to just get on with it and hope it would end soon. She started to unlace her dress, staring out of the window to avoid making eye contact with her now husband.

She shivered as she felt his hand on her shoulder.

“Elena, what are you doing?” He asked.

“Undressing. We cannot possibly keep avoiding this while staying at Rosalea; they would know. They always know. We’d be the talk of Derwentshire and all of this would have been for nothing,” Elena said, her voice shaking slightly.

“I said I would find a way for us to elude that and I have. You should trust your dear husband,” he said with a hint of a smile in his voice.

Elena turned to him. “Is that true? How could we possibly deceive everyone?”

“I have made very specific arrangements. First, I will help you out of that dress and into something more suitable for your trip.”

“Trip? Where am I going?”

“That is a surprise. But to make this work, I will need you to do something positively crazy with me, my friend. Are you ready to act like there is no tomorrow?”

“Of course! If it will aid us in our enterprise, I will try my best.”

“Very well,” he said, working on unlacing her dress with a bit too much confidence for a man who claimed he had never been intimate with a lady, yet Elena decided not to comment on it.

“Thank you, I can continue on my own. Would you please turn around?” Elena asked.

“Of course,” Percy said, removing his own outer layers and accessories.

“What am I going to wear?”

“There is a white dress hanging in the wardrobe. You can put it over your undergarments without the bustle pad or any of the other elements, it was made to fit that way.”

“Thank you, Percy,” Elena said, turning towards the wardrobe only to yelp when she caught sight of her friend in only his undershirt and pants.

Percy blushed and placed his hand strategically in front of his… privates. “I apologise, I do not have any other garments to change and I will need to move. Just - keep your eyes above my waist.
